Nor am I goth or alternative, because I don't embrace a particular ideology that someone tells me to embrace.
On one hand, the punk 'subculture' is supposed to embrace egalitarianism and sticking it to 'the man'. Perhaps this is why they would embrace a cause like Black Lives Matter.
On the other, it also would embrace individual thought and critical thinking, which is why they would adopt alot of opinions not many others would, be they on the left or the right. A lot of punks don't like being told what to do and think.
If the punk subculture was around at about the same time as the American Revolution, they would be embracing freedom of speech and free thought, not the prevailing ideology at the time. Nowadays, the American constitution is considered 'racist' even though there was nothing written there that couldn't apply to African Americans.
Now, take a look at the screenshot below and ask yourself why: you will find that after a few comments on the meme, the moderator or person who posted it, has turned off commenting on the said meme.
Are they afraid that if someone comments and says 'All Lives Matter', would someone else in the group get triggered and accuse them of racism, or something else.
Not to mention that, in the past, punks weren't particularly concerned about offending other people, so why would they be concerned about it now?
And secondly, you are told you have to embrace this cause or that, or you're not part of that 'scene' - that would be very authoritarian to impose your views onto other people, and not allow replies? And that really bothers me.
So whichever way you spin it, if you stop allowing others to say what's on their minds, or if you react by saying, 'You're racist', then that defeats the purpose of punk rock.
Cheers
Colleen
