Festival of Dangerous Ideas - Public Speaking competition

Had I known about this, I would have stepped up to the plate and participated in this. And yes, I will bring music into the debate, especially heavy metal. For instance, is heavy metal really 'dangerous'? Or is the 'phobia' of the music, the bands and its fans justified because of the 'misdeeds' of a few (like the Night Stalker or the Columbine Massacres)? Or is it because of the 'rude' words and concepts which 'offend the sensibilities' of other people who are not fans? For most fans and people who understand heavy metal, the music, themes, visual effects and lyrics rarely shy away from the 'dark side' of society and 'humankind'. But for those who don't understand, the themes portrayed via the lyrics and imagery in this genre, it can represent ideas and themes which can be considered 'dangerous' to the the listeners themselves and to the broader community. Article Review: Took, K, J and Weiss, D, S (1994), ‘The Relationship between Heavy Metal and Rap and Adolescent Turmoil: Real or Artefact? In Adolescence, Volume 29, Number 115, Fall 1994 ; pages 613-621 This journal article illustrates the relationship between preferences for Heavy Metal and/or Rap music, and difficulties during adolescence. Both the teenaged subjects and their parents were interviewed, and the teenagers were asked about their current 'psychosocial functioning' and their music preferences. The group of subjects who liked Heavy Metal and Rap were compared to a group of adolescents who liked other types of music. The focus of concern was the increasingly explicit references to drugs, sex and violence, and Heavy Metal and Rap have come under the most scrutiny from religious, political, parents' and medical groups, which were likely to affect the minds of children and young people. Obesity affects job prospects for women - News Obesity affects job prospects for women Obese women are more likely to be discriminated against when applying for jobs and receive lower starting salaries than their non-overweight colleagues, a new study has found. The study, led by Monash University and published in the International Journal of Obesity , examined whether a recently developed measure of anti-fat prejudice, the universal measure of bias (UMB), predicted actual obesity job discrimination. The international research team also assessed whether people’s own body image, and dimensions of personality such as authoritarianism and social dominance orientation, were related to obesity discrimination.
