For those of you who don't know, this is a month long fundraising activity which starts on the 1st of September and finishes on the 28th. The idea is to raise money for people with Cerebral Palsy.
I felt it was a doable activity - one that I am capable of doing and that I can do in my own time. The task is to take at least 10,000 or more steps per day, every day for 28 days (roughly one month). That goal is the achievable one - I can either walk to or from work, do some activity at the gym (which I guess will be a substantial part of my routine).
However, the PR side is the 'hard' part - I have to firstly get three other people to join my team (which I presume will be in my workplace); and then I have to get other people to be sponsors or part of my 'cheer squad'. I have already put it out on Facebook, though I might have to put it up here (Google + and Blogger) as well. I might even have to put up some vids of myself up on YouTube (now that will be fun, won't it!!!) :D
My motive - though I don't have a visible disability (i.e. physical disability, which involves using a wheel chair or some other 'mobility aid' like a walking stick or frame), I still know what it is like to live with one, to be labelled as 'abnormal', 'weird', 'slow', and yes, I have been called a *spastic* (though I am not what is actually 'spastic') :)
My sympathies go out to Ian Dury - and his song, Spasticus Autisticus (also my own 'theme song' which is pretty much the 'story of my life'). Though he neither has cerebral palsy nor autism, he had polio and was left crippled - but in the song, he really makes fun of himself more than anything. It is also a reminder to be grateful for the things 'able-bodied' and 'normal' people have and tend to take for granted - like walking and being able to take care of oneself. And I am doing this because I am grateful because I can walk!!!
Anyway, for more information on Steptember, go to https://www.steptember.org.au/ and if you want to know about Cerebral Palsy, you can go to https://www.cerebralpalsy.org.au/ for more information.
And if you want to know about what I am doing for this cause, please visit My Steptember Profile, and pledge a donation or be on my cheer squad.
cheers,
Night Owl
