Is your brain making it hard to go out?

Is your brain making it hard to go out?

This is what it is like to have social anxiety for some people, where they find it hard to go out because they fear being judged or scrutinised in some way or another.  Here is what is written on Facebook.

Thank God it's Friday? Maybe for many of you, but for some people, a night out, a family lunch or a catch-up with friends can be a source of major stress and anxiousness.

It's perfectly normal to feel nervous in situations where we might come under the scrutiny of others, whether they are strangers or people we know. However, for people with social phobia, being the focus of other people’s attention can lead to intense anxiety. They may fear being criticised, embarrassed or humiliated, even in the most ordinary, everyday situations.

Thankfully, you can recover from social anxiety and there are many treatments available – young people can check out: http://bb.org.au/1ISk4u5 and the young at heart should visit: http://bb.org.au/1SUVkH1

Until the last decade or so, I had no trouble going out.  It was 2002 that I really started to have problems trying to leave the house.  Though I had no physical reason for being afraid, I was worried that people would laugh at me or put me down.

Part of the reason is that I have been bullied and teased all my life, and it has affected my relationships with people - at work, socially, even at home.

And yet, if I do go out, I actually find I enjoy myself and that things aren't as bad as I expected.

Thankfully, there are many therapies and treatments available for those who find it hard to go out and sites like Beyond Blue have many online resources you can access so you can enjoy your life to the fullest.

cheers,
