Race Relations in Australia: Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders (2)

So what is improving?

The ABC, SBS, NITV and other government funded, community radio and TV stations, and alternative media are now more widespread than ever, making it easier for the broader community to understand Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders.  This in turn, makes it easier for the rest of us to be more inclusive towards them, to understand their cultural needs, or to help them be brought up to speed with the rest of us (if that is their wish).

Educational institutions: many of which have support workers for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, particularly the TAFE Colleges and Universities, which can in turn, address the educational needs of these peoples or any other factors which may impact upon them reaching their potential.

Changing our speech and way of interacting so it doesn't offend them - for instance, not calling them 'abos', 'boongs' or any other name that would hurt them, and instead addressing them by what they would like to be known as, I'm guessing something like 'Koories' or Aboriginal Peoples, or maybe the tribe they are from (if they have some kind of tribal affilation.

Anyway, I am sure I will think of other things, but I hope that something will be done to help their situation and help them help themselves (if that's what they want) as opposed to just giving them handouts, or letting them do what they want (which is no more the answer than mistreating them).

Cheers,
Night Owl
